Purchased a strawberry wheel, bread pudding and a dozen assorted cookies. All were delicious, fresh and reasonably priced. I will always go to French's for my once in a while, treats and cakes.

I will start with the positives about French's Bakery. They make delicious cake. My family have been loyal customers for 35 years, and I believe that is why it is so decidedly disappointing that I am writing a review attached to 1 star. There were a whole lot of little things that happened with French's that I thought were ridiculous but I don't want to bore you all. My issue is simple: they arrived to my wedding THREE HOURS LATE. They did not call to let us know they would not be there on time, and when my coordinator finally got a hold of them the only thing they had to say for themselves is that they were "running late" - no apology. They were assembling the cake in the middle of my cocktail hour, and my poor florist had been waiting for OVER AN HOUR for the cake to arrive so she could decorate it. It is absolutely unbelievable to me that you could conduct business in such a manner, inconvenience people to that extent and not even apologize. When you choose a mom and pop shop you expect to be taken care of as if they care about your business, but that was NOT the impression I got from the beginning to the end. Everything about working with them was DIFFICULT. They do not have email, they do not change orders over the phone, they are not pleasant when you go in, they are not pleasant on the phone. It's as if they do NOT want to help you. Choosing them was a mistake. I'm only one person, I'm only getting married once, but I will absolutely NEVER buy another cake from French's Bakery. I will not recommend them, and you shouldn't choose them unless you're ok with cutting sheet cake. :(

Their pastries are OK nothing really makes me crave for. One thing I was very disappointed was the lady who works there. She was not friendly at all. Because of her I will not order my cake here... I would like to give business to someone who is friendly and welcoming us.

I love this little bakery! There is no sit down area for you to eat your pastries, this is all purely grab and go items, and it is located on a strip mall so it could be a little difficult to find. I purchased a Groupon, which was an excellent deal at the time because Groupon had an extra 20% off local goods, and I was able to purchase $30 worth of goodies at French's Bakery for a mere $8. I came in on an early Saturday morning, and they bake their goodies everyday on location. The smell is intoxicating! I ended up purchasing a plethora of pastries, sandwich bread, cookies, a giant strawberry wagon wheel, danishes, cupcakes, and cream puffs...for $8! They were all fresh, delicious, and kept well. I will be returning again, with or without a Groupon!

Walked in 30 minutes before closing and got a great cake! Can't remember the name of it but it marbled with vanilla and chocolate cake. Very moist and a hit! Everyone loved it! Will definitely go back to try more.

Extremely disappointed. Cake did not look like the picture I provided and did not include the simple details that I requested in writing. I requested a half sheet cake with grass on top with 3 small squares. That's it! They refused to accommodate my request for 3 squares even though a sample cake that they have on display has a ramp (for a car) on top. Their excuse, can't add anything on top. Too difficult. Isn't is harder to make a ramp? I went to pick up my cake at the scheduled time. Asked them 2 add more details (like the picture shows i.e. more grass frosting). Their response. Can't. Too late in the day. They also spelled my son's name with a mix of caps and lower case. Even my 4 yr old doesn't do that. Final straw: no lid for the box!! I asked for foil... anything! Their response: no foil in the entire bakery. They said they could give me saran wrap but it would damage the cake. They said how I transport the cake is my responsibility, not theirs. I asked for a standard half sheet. Why would I think I would not be provided a lid? Very disappointed. This cake was for my son's birthday. I've had amazing experiences from French's in Costa Mesa. This location and Irvine will NEVER get my business again. NEVER! Buyer be ware!!! If you like French's, only buy from the Costa Mesa location.

Came here for some cookies and bought a dozen. Chocolate chip, snicker doodle and peanut butter and they are very stale :( disappointing

  • Anand S.

Went to this place after I bought a groupon. They seemed to have a good collection of cakes, and I picked the Black Forest cake for a birthday. Completely embarrassed with it. The cake wasn't moist at all. Some of the cream on the cake was cracking - usually a sign of stale cream. The cream was covered with chocolate shavings and therefore I did not spot this issue at the store. I think I am going to stick with my neighborhood grocery store for my cake needs.

  • Patricia H.

Cupcakes are awful. I've literally had better from the supermarket. The cake part is dry and the frosting is hard... So disappointing. Their cakes and wagon wheels are decent. I'll come back, but only due to proximity to work.

  • Jamie G.

Tuesdays they have dollar cupcakes, so I bring my kids here sometimes. The cupcakes are okay. Eclaire was better (whip cream center not custard, for those who are wondering). I haven't fallen in love with anything yet. As I start trying their treats I will update!

I was trying to find a good place to pick up a cake for my 21st birthday. When I went in the girl who helped me was nice and answered all of my questions. She was patient and informative when it came to choosing a cake. I like that she wasn't trying to sell me on an extravagant cake. I placed the order a couple days early and it was ready right when I came in to pick it up. The cake was delicious! Definitely one of the best cakes I've ever had. Will definitely be going back!

Love this bakery! We always order our cakes here. They do an excellent job! The customer service is great. They also have great daily deals! I will post a picture of the cake I just ordered soon! Can't wait!

You can buy a better sheet cake at the grocery store or Ralph's. Nothing special about their sheet cakes and they don't even tell you the correct size when you tell them how many people you have to serve. I ordered a cake for 30 and there was only enough for 15 people. Very disappointed in their cakes. Mediocre at best.

  • Jen S.

I went in 2 weeks before my son's birthday party and ordered a custom football cake. Came in a few days after ordering to drop off pictures of football helmets to use. I went in an hour before the birthday party and THEY NEVER MADE THE CAKE!!!!! Said the order was written on the "wrong color paper" REALLY?? Called back later to speak with owner and she said it was an "honest mistake" Made it so easy to take my future cake orders elsewhere.

Recently had French's bake a cake for a special occasion. When we picked it up it was askew and poorly decorated. We had to provide the topper and banding. For $130.00 it was inferior and disappointing. I will not recommend this establishment to any friends and will take my business elsewhere.

  • Krystle G.

Wagon wheel is the best at French's. You can customize your wagon wheel and they are so delicious!! I bought a dozen cupcakes that are on sale Tuesdays in the afternoon for $1. They were ok. Still can't beat Sprinkles moistness in a cupcake.

  • Andres R.

Really nice little store, service is great. I will definitely recommend to have chocolate croissant or small fruit cakes, keep it up guys!!!

Always able to walk right in and get what I need. Fast , courteous and lots of goodies. Ready to please and all smiles. There product is delicious and fresh. You can count on them !!

Best bakery in town. Our family has relied on French's for over twenty years, and since Seacliffe was sold, it is our go-to for cakes as well.

    (5)
  • Adam F.

French's made and delivered our wedding cake. They had the best price of several professionals we shopped around at. (An individual was a bit cheaper, but we wasn't so confident in her.) The cake was yummy and exactly as specified; which was customized slightly from one of their standard designs.

More like 3.5 stars, but I rounded up for the value I received since it's Tuesday. Stopped by on a whim looking for bakery treats to bring to a friend. I got 9 cupcakes and 3 brownies for $13.50! Cupcakes: $1 on Tuesdays, apparently (normally $1.58-2.75) Lemon-Light and bright flavor Red velvet- Moist and tasty Chocolate- Moist, but wish it was more chocolatey Carrot- haven't tasted it yet... Brownies: $1.50 for a nice sized square German chocolate- Frosting with pecans and coconut was amazing Cream cheese frosted- Was ok. Not much cream cheese taste This was a fun little bakery with an old school feel. Not like the trendy bake shops with macarons, artisan this and that, and the pricey desserts that look better than they taste. I'm sure there's something for everyone here.

Walking into this place is DANGEROUS! I LOVE the smell of all the fresh baked goods, the quality is high, BUT the prices are a bit high, but still worth it!

    (5)
  • Beth M.

First time to try this bakery, using Yelp to show me the way....and you did not disappoint! Bought a variety of cupcakes to take to my classmates way over in Ontario - they were a big hit! After everyone took their food selfies, they were also impressed by the taste! Very happy that they enjoyed their treats!

    (5)
  • Claudia M.

I LOVE their sugar cookies with frosting on them!! The ones that are shaped like Rabbits, Butterflies, Flowers, Easter Eggs...I love them. I love every single one of them. If I could, I'd marry them. But I'm glad I can't because I'd be a widow pretty fast if I did. In any case, I love the service, I love the cookies. Will come back for sure!!

  • Dani S.

Dear fellow yelpers, please don't throw rocks at me. The cupcakes here are just bad. They are very pretty looking - see photo. BUT the cake part was hard, cold and dry; frosting was crusty which indicates that these cupcakes has been sitting out for over a day and most definitely not baked fresh!!! Prices are decent $1.60-$2.60 for a cupcake, but why eat bad food even if it is inexpensive?

    (2)
  • Miranda B.

this place is pretty meh..blah..eh...you get my point. It has become a franchise so therefore their quality has become pretty generic, nothing special. I guess if you a dying for something sweet and nothing else is around then this place is ok.

    (3)
  • Sabrina M.

The best petit fours I've ever had!! The cake is so moist and fresh and icing is delicious and not too sweet!

    (5)
  • Marilyn E.

By far the BEST butter cream frosting cake that I have ever had!! I ordered my daughter's birthday cake from here.....12" round white cake with Hello Kitty decorations with white butter cream frosting and it was amazing! The cake was a bit on the pricey side but you definitely get what you pay for. I've also had the German chocolate cake from here and it too is fantastic!

  • Grace C.

purchased Groupon deal. Price wasn't bad at all. Ordered cake around Christmas time. Long line at the store... but people were very nice and informative. seems very old school... but the cake was very tasty. Felt like they need a bit of an update for cake decoration but loved their customer service and taste.

I have tried this location a few times, I find it to be very hit or miss. The wagon wheels are okay, not enough fruit or cream cheese in them for my taste. The breads are pretty good, the pastries are very good and the butter chocolate chip cookies are the best thing in the bakery. The rest of it appears old at times and not as fresh as it should be. Yesterday I bought a dozen of the butter chocolate chip cookies for the wife and a blueberry muffin you myself and the D-O-G. The cookies were great as usual and the muffin was disappointing. If I am going to pay $2 for a muffin, it needs to be freshly made. This one tasted day old (or worse) and lacked a sufficient amount of blueberries. This brings to mind a scene from the movie Casino: Robert De Niro and Kevin Pollack's characters are sitting in a lounge during the morning and De Niro is talking about how you have to watch everything. He looks at his blueberry muffin and the Pollack's character is eating. De Niro observes how his muffin has almost no blueberries and Pollack's is just chalked full of blueberries. I got De Niro's muffin. The top of the muffin made it look like there we plenty of blueberries in it, but once you peel the top off ... almost nothing. It is alright for a bakery, but I think you can get about the same quality at most supermarkets.

How very, very disappointing. I have been using French's for corporate meetings and events and personal use since 1985. I've always loved the quality of their product, cleanliness of their stores, friendliness and knowledge of their staff, etc. I have never had a problem until now... I recently referred a friend to French's to purchase a cake for her parents' 60th anniversary. My friend liked what she was shown and ordered a wedding-style cake. I thought it seemed a bit pricey, but she was okay with the cost. Also, it was scheduled for delivery to coincide with the end of the meal and as a surprise, which should have been very helpful. On party day, the cake arrived almost an hour early, which was a BIG problem. The temperature was in the 90s and the guests were just starting lunch. Because of the the frosting the cake had to be served within 60 minutes or be refrigerated. (I don't know very many homes that have a refrigerator that will accommodate a 3 tier cake!) The driver agreed to return with the cake at the correct time. When the cake was re-delivered and we went to put the "cake topper" on, we noticed that the sentiment requested had not been written on the cake. How could they possibly forget to put the writing on a cake??? Especially a cake that was for such a very special occasion! Next problem - my friend had been given VERY specific directions on how to cut the cake. We followed the directions, but the servings fell apart as we were trying to get them on the plates. Finally, in my opinion, the quality of the ingredients and taste has really gone down hill. I was very disappointed with the entire experience and embarrassed for having referred my friend to French's. A 60th anniversary is a momentous occasion that is not often reached. I would think that French's would have given this occasion the same regard and special attention to detail as a wedding or other "once in a life time" event. Thankfully this was the only problem of the day, the rest of the party was a great success!

Amazing Wagon Wheels .... I have to refrain from eating the entire wheel and then wanting to die from guilt. BUT... so good. Also... their cream cheese brownies are to die for. This place might give me diabetes, but shit, it's going to be worth it.

I was craving a chocolate croissant so I decided to finally check out French's Bakery. They do not have your typical chocolate filled croissant but I found the chocolate drizzled croissant to be even better! I got a little taste of chocolate and powdered sugar in every bite. It was exquisite. It was also Tuesday so I grabbed a $1 cupcake for my fiance and brought it home to him as a special treat. He really enjoyed it but it was actually very sweet so he only finished half and saved the rest for later. I took a tiny bite of it and and thought that the cream cheese frosting was amazing. Much better than the Cupcake Store nearby even though these cupcakes are half the size (but they are also less than half the cost!). I will be back to try some of their other pastries and cupcakes!

I went to visit French's on 4/25/2014 and it was a very very disappointing experience! They have very poor management skills. I went with the intention to buy four cakes each ranging from $25_$30 dollars. The girls who work there did not seem to be enjoying working there. Anyway the problem I encountered was after I spent time choosing my cakes and I discover that the boxes they use do not fit the cakes and when I asked the girl who was helping me( who was very impatient and impolite) that if she can figure something because I am taking the cakes to different people as gifts and it does not look good to give a box that can not be closed. She said sorry but that is all we have and there is nothing she can do and I explained to her that the store should work on designing boxes to fit their cakes. She was impatient after I asked her if she can please wrap it with clear wrap paper that they already had and add a ribbon. I was trying to find a solution. Finally she agreed to do it but she was EXTEMELY GRUMPY and I thanked her so much and then she surprised me and told me after wrapping it there is an additional $5 dollar charge for wrapping. I told her I did not want it wrapped because I should have been informed from the beginning about the fee. Out of no where a guy shows up cuts the wrap madly and throws the cake on the counter and says YOU TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT. I walked away Calmly and said I leave all FOUR!! I went to CINNAMON PRODUCTION, the cakes are more expensive but the treatment is great and the staff is so friendly and polite!!! ALL THE CAKES FIT IN THE BOXES!!! I advise you to NEVER go to French's Bakery. I have been going for three years but they obviously do not have loyalty to their customers :( Next time Mr. manger make a better decision.....$5 vs 4 cakes and a customer forever. Best Regards, Very disappointed customer.

Wonderful cupcakes. Stopped in to get some cupcakes and I about fell over. The place smells like the best bakery on the planet. A wonderful selection of stuff. Reasonable prices and the cupcakes we got were fantastic. One odd thing, the guy who helped us was a putz. Bored, disinterested, borderline rude. Which is odd because it seems like a small, family operation and the woman helping another customer seemed delightful. No matter, I would brave bored guy again to get some of the goods from French's.

disappointed that the sales clerk placed the additional items my sister purchased on top of the cake box! first time i'm able to spend my b'day w/family & my sis gets me a cake from here...b'day greeting & top of cake was smushed into the top of the cake box! epic fail haole girl!!!!! you need to pay attention to how you bag items purchased from your bakery! don't place two boxes if bakery items on top of a decorated birthday cake dumbass!!!!

2 words WAGON WHEEEEEEL!!!! My personal faves are chocolate chip, peach and cinnamon. I swear they sprinkle crack, cocaine or some other addictive drug because i seriously have withdrawals from these dang wagon wheels. They've ruined my life! I'm in the gym calculating how long i need to run jus so i can eat one. Oh and I have almost eaten a WHOLE one by myself.... I have no shame!

i love frenchs and always have for years! i used to have to go all the way to costa mesa but now i found one so close in south county! they have amazing desserts and arent that expensive. they always throw in a couple extra new items to get me hooked on for the next time! 5 stars!

Wow! What happened to French's Bakery? Used to love this place and now everything is turning into small pricey crappy desserts! Éclairs used to be so good and I went into here today and they looked like someone took a bite out of it. Your pride in your desserts are no longer a priority sad Also you should take pride in the people you hire they should at least know how to spell if you are going to have them write on cakes. Very dissatisfied I have been going here for 14 years and now will think twice about coming back.

  • Arshad H.

So this past weekend I tried a few of their cookies ( Snooker Doodles, Chocolate Walnut Cookie, coconut type cookie). All of them were hard and dry. It was as if the cookies had been baked a few days ago and let to sit int the open air. That is completely unacceptable. What's worse is that the cookies were $4.98 for a dozen. I think the only somewhat decent thing here at this bakery is the wagon wheel. Otherwise there is no point in coming here.

I've been eating certain French's Bakery items for years and years, from various locations. I used to think it was 4 star, but now I find that the bakery items can be hit or miss. Perhaps overall quality has gone done. Perhaps I've just been to other and better bakeries and so French's seems stale. I still really like the butter chocolate chip cookies (without nuts), but they are expensive and I'm not really sure worth it. I also got a blueberry muffin and it was overpriced and definitely not worth it. Probably will be back, but only once in awhile.

  • Shannon G.

I got a fruit tart. It was not good at all. The peaches were the worst part. It had one spindly kiwi slice on it. I could have gone to a Vietnamese bakery and gotten one 100times better for one third the price. They charged me almost $5 for one small tart!

  • Karli W.

My 1st Yelp review, a must for this wonderful team who went above and beyond to help me! My pregnant brain failed me and I forgot to pick up my gender reveal cake before closing and was hysterically upset as the party was the next day. The manager was so kind to send someone to the store to help me get my cake and even threw in a plate of cookies and kindly let me know, I wasn't the only one... perhaps to make me feel a little better. So impressed and a new customer for life, not to mention the cake was amazing!!!

Cupcakes! I am not a huge fan of lemon desserts, but had their lemon cupcake and was blown away. It was amazing! I can't wait to go back and try some of their other desserts. I would like to see more of a variety of flavors for their cupcakes though. I would totally recommend this place to friends!

I've only been here a couple of times, but I love this bakery! Im european and this place kind of reminds me of home. So far we've tried a couple of different cupcakes, breads, cookies, eclairs and breadpudding. All have been really good, but the nr.1 reason I come here is for the bread. I dont buy bread in a 'bag' from Ralphs anymore, I just come here. They slice it for you which is really nice. Ive been to the Mission Viejo and Irvine location. I thiiiink I prefer the Irvine location, but.. to be honest I think they prob. have exact the same things. Very clean and friendly. Wish they had some tables outside (maybe they do but Im pretty sure they dont??) so you could sit down and eat what you buys instead of having to bring it home (or gulp it down in the car.lol).

I wish I could include a picture of the cake and cupcakes from French's in Mission Viejo. True art, they were a birthday surprise and they were a beautiful as they were delicious. I remember the pastry "pizza" CR used to deliver to my office - I had no idea they have a Mission Viejo location. Think of what I've been missing!

I have been coming to French's for a few years now, so I have been able to try quite a few different items. Some are outstanding; others, not so much. I just ordered two cakes for my son's first birthday and my father's birthday and both were delicious, fresh, and beautiful. Everyone raved about the taste and how cute my son's cake looked. Also, for first birthdays they throw in a "smash" cake for free. It was a single layer, 7 or 8" cake with white frosting and sprinkles. It was really cute and I thought it was a very nice touch. I have special ordered cakes here in the past and they have all been outstanding, both in appearance and taste. The girls that work there are also always so helpful and patient with me as I try to figure out which cake I want. They are priced very reasonably, as well. The danishes, wagon wheels, scones and croissants have always been really good every time I have purchased them. The cookies are hit or miss. Some are really good, some taste old and stale. The cupcakes. Disappointing. I don't know how they make such delicious cakes and such poor cupcakes. They are really cute, especially their seasonally decorated ones. But, they usually just taste old. This may be because I have been taking advantage of their $1 cupcakes on Tuesday when they may be trying to get rid of old cupcakes? I don't know. I'm hoping they will see the error of their ways and start baking them fresh. I would rather have a fresh, plainer looking cupcake than a super cute but dried out one. Overall, I definitely recommend this place. I can overlook some dried out cupcakes for all the other really yummy things this place has to offer.

We ordered 13 small cakes for a wedding at The Villa Oct. 5. The cakes were delivered on time, were gorgeous and delicious. We couldn't be happier with our choice. Highly recommend.

AMAZING! I am a bakery and donut store lover. I've traveled around the world tasting bakery items and French's is still one of my favs- no joke! I ate there every week while pregnant and now make monthly trips up (from San Diego) to stock up on cookies, cheese danishes, and chocolate eclairs for my hubby. The cookies are the best that I have found. They melt in your mouth and are just delicious!!! I tried all their cheese danish varieties- all delicious! My husband is obsessed with the chocolate eclairs- we tried a few French bakeries down here but he wasn't so keen. Their pricing is good too! Much cheaper than the bakeries around me. They have specials during the week too. I used to go every Thursday for the cookie discount. Cinnamon rolls are amazing as well. Please open up a French's down here in San Diego!!! Please!!!

Should have read Sandy T. et al's reviews for the exact definition and experience with the infamous "wagon wheel." This could have spared me a ridiculous (on my end) exchange that eventually ended with the kind and saintly gentleman behind the counter patiently exclaiming, "Oh! You mean a wagon wheel?" Wagon wheel. Noun. A zillion calories of luscious (but not too over the top) cream cheese, a healthy mound of chocolate chips, and the most deliciously understated buttery goodness baked into a large danish-slash-coffee-cake-like (but again, not too sweet thankfully) pastry about the size of a medium pizza. Example: "Oh, do you have one of those danish... big... pastry... coffee cake... part... croissant... cheesy... chocolate chip... thingies?" "Oh! You mean a wagon wheel?" Stealing the hearts and taste buds of carb lovers everywhere for the bargain price of $9.99. I've been coming to French's for yeeeears and I've never been disappointed with any of their offerings. Now that I'm a big girl and old enough to order my own things, I recently just bought said wagon wheel and a beautifully decorated (last-minute... awesome) birthday cake with a ridiculous selection of fillings and icings. I opted for the marble cake with fresh strawberries and whipped cream icing (the two latter of which are an extra charge, but TOTALLY worth it). Not only was the cake heavy as all hell (which is always a good sign in my book -- especially for 1/4 sheet), but it lasted through an entire day in our work fridge. Awesome. Mr. Smith enjoyed his 40th birthday cake, and I enjoyed seeing him and everybody else enjoy it as well. Thank you French's for saving my a$$! Also, everything you make is delicious and has been for years :)

Can't figure out why the Florentine lace cookies at this French's location are THINNER( skimpier) than the ones at their Costa Mesa store. Please make your Florentine lace cookies as thick and good as the cookies at your Costa Mesa store...it is just too far to drive up to Costa Mesa for the good quality

  • J L.

Hit or miss at this place. Mostly hit, though. Their danishes are awesome!! Their croissants are often over cooked. Yesterday we had a red velvet cake which was absolutely wonderful! I went in the morning, picked out a cake for a small family birthday gathering. They decorated it while I waited a few minutes and it was the hit of the party! Everyone loved it. The staff is very friendly and the place is always clean. I'm definitely a fan!

This review is ONLY for the Mission Viejo location. I've been to this French's 3 times and have not been impressed. Twice we came here for their fresh fruit danish and once for a birthday cake. The danishes were BURNT on the bottom both times and very dry. Very disappointing. The cake was meh; nothing special and not very moist. This location, like all others, does have excellent customer service. Always eager to help and very accommodating (I called in a cake order at 6:00 am for a 8:00 am pick up time...) If management at this location is reading this, please place your cookies and French rolls somewhere other than right next to the check out counter. Every time I have been there there is always some kid breathing or sneezing right on them! Or someone is talking right over them explaining their cake order while SPRAYING their nasty germs all over those tasty rolls! Please remove them from that horrible spot...maybe on top of the display counters? Or maybe cover them with something? [sorry for being so gross, but come on?!?!?!] Of all the French's locations, the one in Irvine (off of Culver) is by far the best one!

Stopped in yesterday. Got a chocolate cake with raspberry jam and ganache frosting. DELICIOUS. Also got a banana nut bread. It,too, is excellent. This place is a REAL bakery, like I knew growing up in Boston. Can't wait to try some more goodies and some of their breads!

HORRIBLE customer service!!! The girl who is supposedly "the person in charge" overcharged me and cannot count! Apparently there are only 10 in a dozen. I called when I got home, but the girl would not give me the name of a manager, and only apologized. Sorry French's but you lost a once loyal customer!

We got our wedding cake and cupcakes here and they were delicious!!! All the staff was super sweet and accommodating. My colors were black and red (my favorite colors) and they made is so the roses on the cupcakes were the perfect shade of red with black tips!!!! I loved them and so did my guests only downside was that the black frosting turned some lips blue, but I expected that and it wasn't Frenchs fault. Anyway the prices are decent and the cake and all the pastries are really good. It is an excellent place for a wedding cake or baby shower and their croissants are amazing! Would definitely recommend =)

We always come here to get our weekly challah, they are by far the best. Just make sure you call ahead to reserve one!

Picked up a cake here for a birthday party on Saturday. They had a nice selection for me relying on what was in the case for my choice. Decided on the chocolate cake with fudge inside and chocolate icing. It was superb and got rave reviews at the party. The price of the cake was great too. My cake was like $21. While I was there some people were picking up two HUGE sheet cakes for a dinner they were going to later. They were decorated and looked good.

Any place that serves something called a Wagon Wheel deserves 4-stars. Its a destination eat just to try one of those things! They sound delicious. I love it when we have a girls night dinner and Sandy T arrives with a pretty pink box for our dessert. Yum! You know its going to be good when something is in a pink box, right? I loved the frosting as it wasn't too sickly sweet, but just fluffy enough. Chocolate cake was moist (HA - girls! shout out to our convos) and just the right amount of chocolate. Now where's my cherry? Oh did I just say that outloud? Musta been the wine at dinner...... ooops my bad.

Lisa V - "I think I dropped my cherry." I walked into French's on my way home from work en route to dinner with the girls at Gyu Kaku. Since I am on the quest for the best cupcake in OC I wanted to try French's. Not very many cupcakes to choose from but the ones I did pick were pretty good. Light frosting and the cherry on top made me smile. The best part $1.30. In OC, a cupcake for 1.30 seems to be a rare find these days. Now, I did get a rum ball (it was next to the cupcakes and looked oh so pretty). My bf tried it and gave me this look of whoa what in the what is this??? He exclaimed TOOO rich. So I took a little bite. I have to agree, unless you adore rum, this was a bit over the top. It reminded me of a drunken ex. What did earn the extra star? The wagon wheel. This man was picking up a giant danish looking thing with cream cheese and choc chips. To which he looked at me and said, "I don't want to know how many calories I am about to eat!" Amen. I can't stop thinking about that danish thing (Amy K was the one to define a wagon wheel for me as I abounded words of the delight). I haven't tried the fresh breads or any of the numerous cakes yet. I stress the word yet. There was a Boston Creme Cake which I found staring at me, begging for me to take it home to eat.

The chocolate chip, and the chocolate fudge cookies are terrible. It was like they were missing sugar! I tried the cupcake, and it was OK.. nothing special. Only thing edible that we got. The brownie was horrible!! I threw it out. The prices are ultra cheap.. you get what you pay for!

Thanks to Miss Sandy T. for the delightful cupcakes from French's Bakery! While they weren't the best cupcakes I've tasted, they were much better than the supermarket variety, and according to Sandy, very economical. We tried the chocolate cupcake topped with what I think is their whipped cream frosting. There was also some chocolate drizzled over the frosting, topped with a cherry for that hand-made touch. It was the perfect ending to a lovely girls' night out. After all, cupcakes make every occasion even sweeter.

Had French's make my wedding cake. It tasted great and looked even better, I felt a little bad about eating such a great looking cake. The staff was super helpful and was willing to work with us so the cake we ordered looked like one we had in a picture. They were also half the price of the next cheapest bakery. I paid $280 for a wedding cake, that is all, most people were asking no less than $500. The cupcakes are the best ever. The cookies were good but it was hard to follow up their awesome cupcake.

Sometimes they overkill with the waxy frosting, sometimes they get it spot on. 3 stars- solid!! The Strawberry Wagon wheels are one of the best things in this store. Chocolate covered croissants are good - not super, but good. I go because it is close by to work and great for last minute Birthdays!!

I've been frequenting the Costa Mesa location for a couple years now, and I had NO idea there was one in MV this entire time. Best bakery in Southern OC so far. Danishes are quite good. I'm addicted to the brownies, but I recommend you take them home and bring them to room temperature for melt-in-your mouth yumminess.

Great location! Still, the Irvine location is my favorite... this one is nice with ample parking and friendly staff. Get the raspberry wagon wheel.

I'm always surprised to see how few bakeries there are in Orange County. Perhaps the low-carb thing has largely taken care of that? Well, whatever it is, I'm happy to see French's is still surviving. Since being established in 1965, it's been voted "Best of OC" 14 years in a row and has 3 other locations in Orange County. Goes to show, low-carb or no-carb, we still love our white bleached flour goodness! Apparently, their "Wagon Wheel" Coffee Cakes - which are pizza sized pastries made in more than 40 flavor combinations - are what make them famous. You know, whenever you wanna throw that diet out the door and go high-carb. They also bake a variety of breads, cookies, cakes, and other goodies daily. It's an absolute feast for the eyes. I recently purchased a Tres Leches Cake here for just over $20. Kinda pricey and not too authentic, I wouldn't recommend it. Though, it was a beautifully crafted cake with a gorgeous array of fresh fruit on top. It was, undoubtedly, a French take on a Latin American recipe. I still have yet to indulge in their other baked goods, but when I do, I'm sure I'll have a big fat carb face to thank them for it.

We ordered our daughter's birthday cakes here last year and they did a FABULOUS JOB. Decorated it to the delight of the 4 yr olds in attendance and I was very pleased. This year...I felt let down ....after the build up of last years phenomenal performance...this year left me deflated. I ordered the same cakes as last year....but, they made me run around town for all the decorations (cake toppers). Last year, they had them and included them in the price. This year, I spent an entire afternoon running around to get them. I had already ordered and paid for the cake;....otherwise I would have gone to the numerous other bakeries that included the decorations in the price and had them on hand . Now....I don't mind doing whatever I need to do to ensure a lovely party for my girls...after all, at the end of the day...it's about them. What I WOULD have appreciated was kindness on the part of the two ladies who "helped" me by taking my order. They were abrupt..and couldn't have cared less and when I asked for suggestions as to where I could find Ariel and Tinkerbell cake toppers...said they "didn't know". A little kindness goes a long way. I never got a smidgen of kindness...I got the attitude of ...if you want to buy here...take it or leave it. I should have left it. The cake was blah! They just lost a customer

Although the baked goods are nice, the inadequate stock of holiday items was incredibly disappointing. Even arriving before noon the items I set out for (yule log, bread pudding and bread) were out of stock. This was not the first time -t a long drive for nothing....and to find the help that was not helpful, didn't even check in back to see it perhaps there was stock.

One word: cheesecake. I hadn't had much of an appetite for a while, but somehow I ate a third of the cheesecake my sister brought home. Light and fluffy, with fresh strawberries and strawberry syrup. I've never had anything else from French's so I wouldn't feel right giving it more than 3 stars, but that cheesecake! *drool*

The earlier you go the better the product selection. My wife uses this Bakery for all yearly cake needs as they come up. We have never had a bad experience here or for that matter any of their locations and we've been frequenting French's for over 25 years. I do agree with a couple of issues, at least at Mission Viejo. They should move all the product from next to the register to another location and pull all bread and roll bags up higher from floor and out of all the 'Cookie Cruncher's' reach. However that said it is really the responsibility of the PARENT'S of all these ill mannered little kids that need to manage and control their kids. Since everything is daily fresh here, specifically the breads and rolls I am referring to, you'll need to use them sooner than later. Everything is better consumed within a day or two of purchase....so if the icing gets hard three days down the line....well it will. Not completely sure about some of the complaints and issues here. If you want a Van De Camp Sweet Roll pack or a loaf of Wonder Bread, this is not the place to go, you will be disappointed. If you want a fresh bakery product or freshly baked bread, rolls or other specialty bakery items, well French's Bakery is the place!

I Love this place!!! Their blueberry scones are to die for!!! I love most of their morning pastries, it's just too bad they don't make coffee. I am not a real fan of their cakes, unless it's the ones with fruit and a whipped cream frosting. They also make killer brownies, but this too, has been hit or miss as far as freshness. The cookies are fair, not always the freshest. If you go in on a Thursday you can save $2.00 on a dozen. Which is good to remember for those occasions when you need to bring cookies somewhere. If you want a sure thing that will please your sweet tooth, stick to the morning pastries they are sooo good.

This is by far one of the worst bakeries I have ever been to. I ordered my son's birthday cake from them for the first time. I wanted something special for my son and I thought that a cake from them would be great. The writing on the cake looked like it was done by a two year old. The coconut custard was almost the color of orange instead of a nice custard color that you would expect. There was hardly any coconut in the custard. The custard had the consistency of Jello (solid) instead of a creamy custard that I was expecting. The cake itself was horrible. I make cakes out of the Betty Crocker boxes and it tastes a thousand times better than the one they made. I was so disappointed with the whole cake. Every one of our guests took one bite of the cake and did not eat anymore and they told me how horrible the cake was. I don't understand how they can stay in business with the poor quality of products that they make and sell to the public. Cakes from Ralph's and Von's are a million times better than French's Bakery!!!! I should have purchased my cake from the grocery store and not paid the hefty price for a cake that was horrible.

I recently purchased two breads in the Mission Viejo location, and they were among the worst bakery breads I have ever tasted- in terms of both taste and texture. One was an egg/jalepeno/cheese bread which was mushy and tasteless, and the other was a baguette, which was dry, hard, and tasteless. The quality, coming from a bakery was surprisingly bad, and doesn't even compare to commercially packaged breads you can buy at standard grocery stores.

i love their cake. i've sent my guy here to order my birthday cakes (hey, i can't buy my own birthday cake!), and he's always come back with winners. their buttercream frosting is good because it is sweet, but not toothache sweet. the fillings and cake always taste great. i've sent some vague descriptions/drawings of what i want, and they've always put a lot of care into the design.
